COLLEGE STATION – Michelle Abney joined Texas A&M University on Jan. 7 as the new Texas A&M Leach Teaching Gardens education coordinator and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service associate in College Station.

“We are thrilled to have such an experienced and enthusiastic educator join the Leach Teaching Gardens team,” said Dr. Patrick Stover, vice chancellor and dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research. “Ms. Abney will be an outstanding addition to connect our community with healthy living through agriculture, natural resources and the outdoors.”

Abney will work with volunteers, faculty, staff, students and the community to create new partnerships, leverage existing programs and build networks to bring campus and community into The Gardens to deliver educational outreach and programs. Her focus will cover a variety of topics, which could include horticulture, health and wellness, agricultural literacy, nature and environment and others.

“I have a vision for The Gardens at Texas A&M,” said Abney. “I want every Aggie, school kid and out-of-town visitor to find peace and inspiration in Aggieland’s big beautiful backyard.”

Abney previously worked as a science teacher and science department head for A&M Consolidated Middle School in College Station; director of Camp Invention in College Station; biology teacher at Rudder High School in Bryan; and science enrichment coordinator at Pebble Creek Elementary in College Station.  

“This position blends all of my past experiences and accomplishments into the perfect job,” she said.
