Meek begins AgriLife Extension assistant agent position in Ochiltree County

PERRYTON – Tommy Meek joined the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service July 1 in a new agriculture and natural resources assistant agent position in Ochiltree County.
Brandon Dukes, AgriLife Extension district administrator in Amarillo, explained that two new assistant agent positions are being filled in District 1, the top 22 counties in the Panhandle, as a training program for future county agent positions. The other will be a family and community health position in Hemphill County.
“We are excited to bring Tommy on board,” Dukes said. “He has experience in both ranching and with youth, and after he gets some more production agriculture training working with Scott Strawn in Ochiltree County, he’ll be ready to lead a county program of his own.”
Meek grew up on a cow/calf ranch north of Mobeetie and earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture with teacher certification from West Texas A&M University. He has spent the past six years as the agriculture science teacher at McLean Independent School District.
“I wanted to reconnect with agriculture a little more, with the farmers and ranchers,” he said. “As a teacher, you get to work with youth and I liked that, but the connection to agriculture is not as direct.
“I’m looking forward to learning more about the production side of agriculture and learning what producers need to know and how I can help them as they look at programs and practices,” Meek said.
