SPEARMAN – Working for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has been something of a “family affair” for Andrew Sprague, who was hired as the new agriculture and natural resources agent for Hansford County.

Sprague, a native of Darrouzett, began in the Spearman office on July 20, after completing a month-long internship in Deaf Smith County.

“Extension is what I grew up around, so I thought it would be a good fit,” he said.

His dad, J.R. Sprague, has been an AgriLife Extension agent for more than 29 years, 26 of those in Lipscomb County, and his sister, Haley Martin, is the 4-H youth development agent in Moore County.

“We are excited to attract an individual with the talent and experiences that Andrew has with our organization,” said Brandon Dukes, AgriLife Extension district administrator in Amarillo. “He has the knowledge and skills necessary to be an asset to the ag producers, as well as 4-H members, parents and volunteers in Hansford County.”

Sprague, who just earned his bachelor’s degree in agriculture education from West Texas A&M University, said he looks forward to working with everyone in Hansford County.

“The 4-H program is already strong, so we will just need to work on getting past the county level in some of our competitions,” he said. “And I hope to bring in more educational meetings in the areas of small grains and irrigation for the producers.”
