AgriLife Extension names new Runnels County agent

BALLINGER – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has named Marty Vahlenkamp the new county agent for agriculture and natural resources in Runnels County effective Jan. 15. The announcement was made by Runnels County Judge Barry Hilliard and Marty Gibbs, AgriLife Extension administrator in San Angelo.

“We are pleased to have Marty join us here in AgriLife Extension’s West Central District,” Gibbs said. “He’s a veteran agent with a top track record within the agency. Runnels County is unique in its agricultural diversity with a good mix of crop and livestock production. The county also has a number of communities within its borders. These points, coupled with the county’s rich AgriLife Extension tradition, make it ideal for this seasoned agent. We are very pleased to have him become part of our 23-county district.”

Vahlenkamp earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University, College Station, and a master’s degree in agriculture with emphasis on ruminant nutrition from West Texas A&M University, Canyon.

He transfers from Hood County where he has served since 2001. He began his career with the agency as an assistant county agent in Ellis County, serving there from 1999-2001.

In accepting the Runnels County job, Vahlenkamp said he feels the position is one that will fill his desire to work with agriculture producers as well as “be a part of a strong traditional 4-H program, and allow me to grow personally.”

In his previous posts, Vahlenkamp has worked extensively with the 4-H youth program while maintaining an active adult education program focused on beef cattle, water, brush management and horticulture.
