1980s TAMUNUTS Can Picture
The idea of gossypol-free cottonseeds as a human food is not new. A project in 1980s developed these TAMUNUTs as a snack food, but the project failed at the time because the entire plant was devoid of gossypol, which is necessary for the rest of the plant’s protection. The new TAM66274 has gossypol-free seeds, but the remainder of the plant retains the gossypol for its protection. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Keerti Rathore)
