AgriLife Extension sets groundwater roundtable in Big Spring

BIG SPRING – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Howard County will conduct a groundwater roundtable from 1-4 p.m. April 19 in the G.C. Broughton Jr. Ag Complex in Big Spring.
The complex at 2411 Echols Drive is located on the Howard College Campus.
“The problem prompting this roundtable discussion, and it’s a huge one, is we are running out of water,” said Tommy Yeater, AgriLife Extension agent in Howard County. “Our groundwater supply is becoming so depleted that we soon won’t have enough for sustained municipal use, let alone for supporting our extensive cotton crop. The goal of this roundtable is to address several of the key issues we face as well as to explore some solutions to this critical issue.”
Yeater said discussion topics will include:
– Brackish groundwater – why is it important?
– The Texas Department of Agriculture’s role in the future of water.
– Proposed guidelines for injection wells and groundwater management.
– Emerging technologies for alternative water.
Yeater said the roundtable is free and open to the public.
Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered, pending the agency’s approval.
