AgriLife Extension in Bexar, Wilson counties to begin hay testing campaign

SAN ANTONIO –The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Bexar and Wilson counties will hold a forage testing campaign for hay from Aug. 1-31.
During this campaign, hay samples will be analyzed at a reduced cost of $5 each, coordinators said. Samples will be evaluated for crude protein, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, total digestible nutrients and estimated digestibility.
“This is a great opportunity to have your hay analyzed prior to this fall and winter,” said Sam Womble, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources, Bexar County. “Understanding the nutritional value of dry forage can save a lot of money on supplemental feed.”
Womble said those interested in participating should contact the AgriLife Extension office in Bexar or Wilson counties to obtain sampling materials. For additional information, see the program flyer at http://bit.ly/295VFtz.
He said results of the sampling will be available Sept. 27 at two educational programs to be presented by Dr. Larry Redmon, AgriLife Extension program leader.
“Dr. Redmon will be conducting an educational program called Managing for High-Quality Hay and will discuss the results of the hay analysis at that time,” Womble said. “Participants will have the option of attending either program.”
The first program will from 2-4 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office for Wilson County, 1103 4th St., Floresville. The second will be from 6-8 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive, Suite 212, San Antonio.
Womble said samples and payment are due at the AgriLife Extension office in Bexar or Wilson counties by Aug. 31.
“There will be 1.5 Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units available for either meeting,” he said.
