The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the 2024 Winter Garden Row Crop Conference on Jan. 29 in Hondo.

The event will be held from 8 a.m.-2:15 p.m. at the Hermann Sons Life Hall, 251 Texas Highway 173. Registration is $10. To RSVP, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Medina County at 830-741-6180. The deadline to RSVP is Jan. 24.

A total of three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for private applicator licenses, including two general and one laws and regulations. There also will be one laws and regulations credit given for the optional auxin training that will be held in the afternoon.

A catered lunch will be provided and there will be a trade show during the event.

Kris Ede, field representative, Texas Farm Bureau, Uvalde, and Emilee Trlica, area coordinator, Texas Farm Bureau, New Braunfels, will be speaking on legislative updates during lunch.  

Conference agenda

The program will cover the following topics:

  • Key pests of row crops – Noel Troxclair, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Medina County.
  • Texas Department of Agriculture laws and regulations update – Vick Alexander, assistant regional director, Texas Department of Agriculture, San Antonio.
  • Effective management of weeds in row crops – Ronnie Schnell, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist and associate professor in the Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
  • 2024 market panel discussion – Bryce White, producer relations director, Texas Corn Producers, Lubbock; Florentino Lopez, consultant, Creando Manana Agricultural Consulting, Utopia; Jeff Nunley, executive director, South Texas Cotton and Grain Association, Victoria; Brendon Lowe, president, Mumme’s, Hondo; and Nelson Reus, crop consultant, Reus Ag Services, Hondo.
  • Auxin training – Schnell.
