HOUSTON — Adults and children ages 12 and older are invited to help plant the shoreline of the new lake at Exploration Green, 1800 Reseda Drive, Houston.

Planting times will be 9 a.m.-noon June 18 and 25, according to Mary Carol Edwards, Stormwater Wetland Program coordinator for the Texas Coastal Watershed Program, part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas Sea Grant.

Edwards said volunteers will help install native wetland plants grown in a nursery at Exploration Green.

“Tools will be provided,” she said. “Volunteers should be prepared to get wet and dirty while doing this important work to improve the water quality and habitat of their community.”

Exploration Green is a 200-acre site, formerly the Clear Lake City Golf Course, which was purchased by the Clear Lake City Water Authority for use as a stormwater detention area, organizers noted.

The master plan calls for Exploration Green to have five connected finger lakes, 12 miles of hike-and-bike trails, safe play areas, multi-use athletic fields and several gathering spaces, along with water-cleansing natural wetland areas, indigenous wildlife habitat and a more natural environment for native grasses, flowers and trees, according to area officials.
