AgriLife Extension-led stakeholder meeting to launch ‘green’ infrastructure initiative for Denton County
A stakeholder meeting on March 13 will launch the project titled “Incorporating Green Infrastructure/Low Impact Development, Open Space and Nature-Based Systems” into the Denton County Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The project is a collaboration among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the City of Denton. The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the City of Denton’s Emily Fowler Library at 502 Oakland St.
The initiative aims to implement “green” infrastructure and low-impact development into Denton County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan. The interventions would address urban stormwater’s negative impact on environmental and human health.
“These practices have been shown to be effective in reducing runoff volume as well as typical urban pollutants such as total suspended solids, bacteria, nitrogen, phosphorus and other typical pollutants,” said Fouad Jaber, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension associate professor of ecological engineering in Dallas.
AgriLife Extension will conduct the meeting process. The agency will provide follow-up information and solicit input regarding the project.
The meeting will address the following:
- Goals and expectations of the project.
- Overview of the City of Denton Watershed Protection Program.
- Overview of the Denton County Greenbelt Plan.
- An introduction to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Silver Jackets.
- Discussion of the stakeholder process and future steps.
The official event agenda includes more detailed information.
The stakeholder process will consist of at least one additional meeting over the duration of the project. The next meeting will be held in approximately one year. It will cover results and serve as a forum for feedback on project results.
Stakeholders will be kept apprised of project developments via email and will be asked to provide input.
