Kids & Kows & More youth agriculture event offers drive-thru experience
Attendees can choose between Nov. 14 or Nov. 15 ‘Cattle Drive’ options in San Antonio
This year, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, San Antonio Stockyards Historical Society and Southwest Dairy Farmers will be presenting the annual Kids & Kows & More agricultural education event for youth in a new drive-thru format.
Those wishing to attend will have the option of experiencing the 2020 Kids and Kows Cattle Drive from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on either Nov. 14 or Nov. 15 at the San Antonio Rose Palace, 25665 Boerne Stage Road, San Antonio.
“Due to COVID-19, we have had to change the event format considerably,” said Natalie Cervantes, AgriLife Extension 4-H youth development agent, Bexar County. “Instead of our regular hands-on expo, we will be providing attendees with an interactive drive-thru scenario we feel will give them a safe, yet unique and compelling, educational experience.”
Cervantes said participants will see farm animals such as cattle, goats, lambs and chickens, as well as crops and agricultural equipment, on this two-hour drive to raise youth agricultural awareness.
“Your smart device will be able to track your GPS location and deliver information as you’re driving by each exhibit,” she said. “Guests will drive away with goodies and supplies to complete fun projects at home. Every child will receive a goodie bag at the start of their drive and can pick up additional items at the scavenger hunt exhibits.”
Giveaway items may include local Texas agricultural products, take-home activity kits/booklets and other fun prizes.
Tickets for the program will be limited, and guests are encouraged to register online. Guests must select a date and time slot for participation when they register. Each drive will be limited to 30 vehicles for safety and to ensure visibility of each exhibit. Guests may only participate on the date selected.
Go to the website for AgriLife Extension in Bexar County for more program details.
Event cost is based on the number of guests per preregistered vehicles:
- Preregistered vehicle with 1-2 guests – $50.
- Pre-registered vehicle with 3-4 guests – $65.
- Pre-registered vehicle with 5 or more guests – $80.
Additional guest registration on-site per preregistered vehicle is $40 per added guest.
“A startup app company is sponsoring us this year and will be providing us with an app that will allow guests to see short videos explaining the exhibits as they drive up to them,” Cervantes said. “We’re blessed this year to have a new format that will help us meet the challenges presented by the pandemic so kids can still experience this agricultural education event, which is one of our flagship interdisciplinary programs.”
Cervantes also said AgriLife Extension is looking for volunteers willing help on one or both days of the program. For more information on volunteering, email Cervantes.
