The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host the Hill County Wheat Scout School on Feb. 12 in Hillsboro.

The free event will be held from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office in Hill County, 213 Stadium Drive. An RSVP is required by Feb. 9. A total of three Texas Department of Agriculture, TDA, continuing education units — one general and two integrated pest management — will be available during the scout school. There also will be 5 1/2 total hours of certified crop adviser continuing education units available in addition to TDA units.

Scout school program agenda

The program will feature the following speakers and topics:

  • Identification and management of wheat insect pests — Mays.
  • Identification and management of wheat diseases — Tom Isakeit, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension plant pathologist and professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Bryan-College Station.
  • Identification and management of common weeds — Matt Matocha, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management specialist, Stiles Farm, Thrall.
  • Agronomic considerations for winter grain crops — Brandon Gerrish, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension small grains specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
