Pond evaluation and preparation for a professional site visit will be the subject of a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service webinar from noon to 1 p.m. on April 4.

The webinar is part of the ongoing Texas A&M Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management Stewardship Series.

Cost is $35, and advance registration is required at https://tx.ag/PondEvaluation.

After payment is received, a follow-up email will be sent from the event organizer with instructions on how to access the webinar.

A wide range of topics covered

Todd Sink, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension aquaculture specialist and associate professor in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Bryan-College Station, will be the featured speaker.

The webinar aims to equip new or potential owners with the tools to evaluate an existing pond; identify potential and current issues; and communicate goals and issues to management professionals.

Sink said many of the topics covered may be applied to new pond construction and can help landowners avoid potential management mistakes.

Topics include:

  • Determining management goals.
  • Determining the size of a pond.
  • Identifying water sources for the pond.
  • Determining the management budget and intensity.
  • Identifying aquatic vegetation species present and potential management issues.
  • Catch or stocking records and fish population present.
  • Issues with the fish population.
  • Water quality.
  • Who to contact for assistance.
