Private water well screenings set for Jan. 17-18 in Goliad
Residents are invited to water well screenings and results meeting
The Texas Well Owner Network, TWON, is hosting an upcoming event in Goliad Jan. 17-18 to allow residents to have their well water screened.
Water samples will be screened for contaminants, including total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen and salinity.
“The TWON program was established to help well owners become familiar with Texas groundwater resources, septic system maintenance, well maintenance and construction, and water quality and treatment,” said Joel Pigg, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist, Bryan-College Station. “It allows them to learn more about how to improve and protect their community water resources.”
Water sampling and meeting information
Residents can drop off water samples at the AgriLife Extension office for Goliad County, 329 W. Franklin St., or the Goliad County Groundwater Conservation District, GCD, office, 118 S. Market St. in Goliad, from 8:30-10 a.m. on Jan. 17.
The four-hour educational program will cover water-well basics, aquifers, septic systems, water quality and water treatment options, and residents’ sample results. The program on Jan. 18 will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the Julie Wimberly Memorial Homemaking Building, 935 S. Jefferson St., Goliad.
Sampling instructions
Residents wanting to have their well water screened should pick up the sample bag, bottle and instructions from the local AgriLife Extension office or GCD office prior to the day of the event. There will be a $15 charge per water sample for screening, and residents may bring as many samples as they would like.
“It is very important that only sampling bags and bottles be used, and all instructions for proper sampling are followed to ensure accurate results,” Pigg said.
Pigg said it is essential for those submitting samples to be at the follow-up meeting to receive results, learn corrective measures for identified problems and improve their understanding of private well management.
