The six-lecture series is open to 30 people and will be held on Aug. 26, Sept. 2, Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 at the AgriLife Extension office, 13105 Northwest Freeway, Suite 1000.

The cost for the series is $75 for individuals and $100 for couples, which includes dinner. Online registration is available at https://tx.ag/UrbanRancher

About the series

The Urban Rancher Lecture Series includes six seminars plus field days designed to provide information and resources related to agriculture, natural resources, wildlife and land stewardship for new or existing landowners throughout the state. 

Participants in the program will hear from experts in various fields about best management practices that can be implemented on their property to get the most value and enjoyment for themselves and their families.

Topics and speakers include: 

  • Aug. 26: Welcome to AgriLife Extension, agriculture exemptions, land laws/usage — Steven Frederick, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Harris County, and Christopher Shackelford, appraiser, agricultural/commercial division, Harris County Central Appraisal District. 
  • Sept. 2: Backyard poultry production — Greg Archer, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension poultry specialist and professor, Texas A&M Department of Poultry Science, Bryan-College Station. 
  • Sept. 9: Horticulture/urban gardening — Stephanie Gray, AgriLife Extension horticulture agent, Harris County.
  • Sept. 16: Beekeeping 101 — Lauren Ward, AgriLife Extension honeybee program specialist, Angleton. 
  • Sept. 23: Water-smart technologies — David Smith, AgriLife Extension program specialist, Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Bryan-College Station. 
  • Sept. 30: Viticulture and grow — Daniel Hillin, AgriLife Extension viticulture specialist, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Lubbock.
