The Texas Water Resources Institute, TWRI, will host a public meeting on the water quality of the Little Bay watershed on May 7 in Rockport.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bay Education Center, 121 Seabreeze Drive and is for anyone interested in learning about the ongoing research in the Little Bay watershed involving microbial source tracking and human health risk analysis.

Shay Postma, TWRI research associate with Texas A&M AgriLife Research in Bryan-College Station, said the meeting is the second of two with watershed stakeholders to discuss recent research project findings. The meeting will also provide an update on research results, and there will be an opportunity for discussion and stakeholder input.

A coordinated effort

TWRI is coordinating this project along with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health and Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, with the goals of evaluating recently published microbial source tracking data from Little Bay and estimating potential human health risks associated with different recreational activities in the bay via a mathematical modeling approach.

This project was funded by a Texas Coastal Management Program grant approved by the Texas Land Commissioner, providing financial assistance under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, Office for Coastal Management, pursuant to NOAA Award No. NA22NOS4190148.
