Guadalupe County Master Gardener class open for registration

SEGUIN – Guadalupe County residents interested in learning more about gardening and sharing that knowledge with others are invited to join the upcoming Guadalupe County Master Gardener class, said program coordinators.
Classes will be Tuesdays from 12:45-4:45 p.m., starting Aug. 8 and ending Dec. 5. They will be at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office, 210 E. Live Oak in Seguin.
Topics will include plant growth, good versus bad bugs, Earth-Kind gardening techniques, lawn care, herbs and vegetables, tree care and composting.
Cost is $190 payable upon the applicant’s acceptance into the program. Application deadline is July 31 and forms can be found at http://guadalupecountymastergardeners.org/.
Individuals who complete the training and required volunteer hours become certified Master Gardeners and assist AgriLife Extension through community education in horticulture. Volunteer hours may be applied to a variety of approved projects discussed during the training.
“Master Gardeners support the community by providing information and advice on gardening and landscaping, providing technical assistance, supporting the local green industry and being involved in a variety of horticulture-related community service projects,” said Kay McElveen, Guadalupe County Master Gardener conducting this year’s class.
She said in Seguin the association works diligently to maintain the garden area at the Big Red Barn, otherwise known as the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center.
“We’re also putting in a new vegetable garden behind the Seguin Christian Cupboard to provide fresh produce for those in need,” McElveen said. “You also see us at the county fair, during Earth Day activities and at plant sales.”
She said the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners also maintain the Guadalupe County Community Garden in Schertz. They grow and donate produce to the local food banks and work in coordination with the City of Schertz to help plan aesthetic improvements. In addition, they implement Texas Superstar plantings along the walking trail at Gutierrez Park.
“At the Veterans Memorial Park in Marion we are helping to establish a beautiful place to visit,” she added. “And on an ongoing basis, we provide Junior Master Gardener education programs for public schools teaching children about horticulture and nutrition.”
