The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Williamson County will present the Step Up and Scale Down 12-week weight management program in person and online starting May 20 to help people shape up for summer.

The in-person part of the program will kick off at the AgriLife Extension office in Williamson County, 100 Wilco Way, Suite AG205, Georgetown. Those wanting to participate virtually can do so via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent once registration is completed.

Classes will be from noon-1 p.m. for 12 consecutive Thursdays from May 20 to Aug. 12. Pre-registration is available online by clicking on the Program and Event Registration tab at https://williamson.agrilife.org/. The deadline is May 18. 

“This time of year, a lot of people are thinking more about getting some exercise so they can be ready for summer,” said Andrea Haubner, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Williamson County. “Actually, any time of year is a good time to take actions to improve your health and wellness, but right now getting in better shape by summer seems to be top of mind for many people.” 

The cost for the program is $25, which includes all course materials. It consists of weekly lessons to help participants move toward a healthier weight. Program content includes:

— Weekly weight check-in.
— Weekly challenge to “stay the course.”
— Healthy recipes, food demonstrations and tips.
— Exercise resources.
— Weight-loss planner.

Individual program sessions

“The Step Up and Scale Down program is based on U.S. Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines, which are intended to help Americans choose a healthful eating plan,” Haubner explained. “It is a researched-based program that has proven success in weight management and building healthy lifestyle habits.”

The 12 Step Up and Scale Down sessions are:

— Scale Down by Setting Goals.
— Step Up to a Healthy Plate.
— Scale Down by Label Reading.
— Step Up to Breakfast and Menu Planning.
— Scale Down with Moves to Lose.
— Step Up Your Hydration.
— Scale Down by Finding Your Motivational Mojo.
— Step Up to Healthy Snacking.
— Scale Down with a Colorful Plate.
— Step Up to Successful Socializing.
— Scale Down by Knowing Your Numbers.
— Step Up and Celebrate.
