Professional food manager training set for Jan. 14-15 in Lubbock
Certification course covers safe food preparation, handling and serving
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Lubbock County is offering a Professional Food Manager Training Course.
The two-day, in-person course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 at the AgriLife Extension office in Lubbock County, 916 Main St., Lubbock.
The cost of the course is $125, which includes training, materials and a national food manager certification exam. Registration is available by calling the county office at 806-775-1740. The deadline to register is Dec. 30.
“We’re excited to offer this in-person, two-day training to fully prepare those who are required to have the food manager’s certification to be confident in providing safe food to the public and to pass the ServSafe exam,” said Cory Edwards, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent, Lubbock.
About the course
The event is designed for food service managers and the certification is valid for five years in the state of Texas. The Texas Department of State Health Services requires a certified food protection manager to be present at food establishments during all hours of operation.
Around 3,000 people die each year due to foodborne illnesses. Edwards said the majority of these cases could be prevented by following simple food safety practices.
Food safety training topics that will be covered include:
- Identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling.
- Preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food.
- Teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees.
- Complying with government regulations.
- Maintaining clean utensils, equipment and surroundings.
- Controlling pests.
