The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in McLennan County will host a two-day food manager certification training on Aug. 5 and Aug. 12 in Waco.

The program will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office, 4224 Cobbs Drive, Waco. Registration is $125 and includes course materials and the opportunity to take the certification exam.

Space is limited, and the deadline to RSVP is Aug. 1. To RSVP, contact Rachel Esquivel, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent in McLennan County, at 254-757-5180.

Participants need to download a registration form at https://tx.ag/AugFoodMgrCert and mail the completed form with their check or money order to Food Safety Education, 2253 TAMU, 118 Cater-Mattil, College Station, Texas 77843-2253.

Participants must attend both dates and provide a valid photo identification to take the certification exam. Certifications are valid for five years and are good anywhere in Texas.

Course prepares food managers for exam

The Texas Department of State Health Services requires all food establishments to employ at least one certified food manager.

Esquivel said the course helps participants prepare for the exam and provides valuable food safety information, as well as information on updates to important government regulations.

Food manager training topics

The course includes the following topics:

  • Identifying potential food safety hazards and common errors in food handling.
  • Preventing contamination and cross-contamination.
  • Teaching and encouraging employee personal hygiene.
  • Complying with government regulations
  • Understanding the hazard analysis and critical control points management system.
