The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a two-day food manager certification course on May 21-22 in Lubbock.

The “Food Safety: It’s Our Business” program is designed for food service managers and provides valuable education regarding the safe handling of food and prepares them for the certification exam. The training will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at the AgriLife Extension office in Lubbock County, 916 Main St., Suite 401.

The cost to attend is $125, and participants can register by calling the office at 806-775-1740. The registration fee includes the training, course materials and the national food manager certification exam. Certifications will be valid anywhere in Texas for five years.

“We’re excited to offer this in-person, two-day training to fully prepare those who are required to have the food manager’s certification to be confident in providing safe food to the public and to pass the ServSafe exam,” said Cory Edwards, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent in Lubbock County.

Course educates, prepares participants for exam

The Texas Department of State Health Services requires each food establishment to have at least one certified food manager employed.

Edwards said that 3,000 people die each year due to foodborne illnesses, which the majority could be prevented by following simple food safety practices.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling.
  • Preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food.
  • Teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees.
  • Complying with government regulations.
