COLLEGE STATION — Dr. Sam D. Cotner has been named head of the horticulture department at Texas A&M University. Cotner formerly was associate head and Extension program leader in the department.
Throughout his career, Cotner, a native of Edinburg, has focused on vegetable production, working with both commercial and home growers. He has authored numerous articles about vegetable production and a book, “The Vegetable Book: A Texan’s Guide to Gardening.”
He received a bachelor’s degree in agronomy in 1964, a master’s in horticulture in 1967, and a Ph.D. in horticulture in 1977, all from Texas A&M.
Cotner is a member of numerous professional organizations and has won many awards, including the Texas Agricultural Extension Service Superior Service Award, the Deputy Chancellor for Agriculture’s Distinguished Performance Award in Extension and the Association of Former Students’ Faculty Distinguished Award in Extension.
