COLLEGE STATION — An $11,000 scholarship with matching funds from the College of Agriculture Development Council has been donated to Texas A&M University.
Ralph Mayer of Sonora designated the scholarship for students entering the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Mayer said he hopes the funds will assist students in receiving a quality education.
“We wanted to provide financial assistance to those students who otherwise could not afford college,” he said.
Mayer, a 1945 graduate of Texas A&M, served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He returned to Sonora where he and wife, Bobby Lou, have been ranching ever since.
The Mayer’s consider their ranching business a family partnership, and Texas A&M is big part of family tradition. Their son, Robert Mayer, graduated from Texas A&M in 1985 and their daughter, Bonnie Lou, is married to an Aggie.
Mayer said the family wanted to give something back to Texas A&M. He said the donation will give deserving students an opportunity to succeed.
