DALLAS — Dairy Day in Dallas, sponsored by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and supported by the local dairy industry, will be part of the Family Farm Festival at Samuell Farm June 5-6 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
“One of our most popular events is always the cow milking,” said Fred Burrell, Dallas County Extension agent. “Kids of all ages get a chance to ætry their hands’ at milking a cow. Dairy Day is designed to let families show their children where milk really comes from. Samuell Farm is the perfect setting for that.
“An added attraction will be the milk mustache photo contest sponsored by the Milk Mustache Mobile Tour on its Cruise for Calcium project,” Burrell said. “Dallas is one of 100 cities on the tour, which draws attention to our nutritional need for calcium to ensure good health. Visitors may stop by the Better Bones Tent for free bone density tests and osteoporosis risk assessment. The Heart Health tent also will have information on the benefits of milk for healthy hearts.
Dairy Day features free samples of milk products, including ice cream, cheese, yogurt, chocolate and white milk, even buttermilk. And, the mobile dairy classroom from the Southwest Dairy Museum will be on hand for demonstrations of milking machines and how dairy cows are cared for.
“We’ll also have puppet shows and other exhibits providing nutrition information on the benefits of drinking milk and eating dairy products,” he said.
The annual Samuell Farm Festival, an event sponsored with the Dallas Park & Recreation Department, features traditional farm activities like blacksmithing, barnyard tours, tractor pulls, arts and crafts and farm animal exhibits.
“There are plenty of places to enjoy a picnic lunch, put a line in the water or ride horses. Refreshments also are available from the concession stands,” said Burrell.
To reach Samuell Farm, take Highway 80 east to Belt Line exit and follow signs on the service road.
