COLLEGE STATION — Students and faculty from Texas A&M University’s department of horticultural sciences swept key leadership positions at the annual meeting of the American Society for Horticultural Science recently in Sacramento, Calif.
Dr. Dan Lineberger, Texas A&M horticulture professor, was installed as president of the society whose nearly 4,000 members come from the United States and international academic institutions, governmental research agencies, and horticultural industries.
Lineberger will continue as the chairman of the board following a year that will culminate at the International Horticultural Congress in Toronto in August 2002. Dr. Fred Davies, Texas A&M horticulture professor, was selected vice president for the society’s International Division.
Allison Scott, an undergraduate horticulture major from Amarillo and president of the Texas A&M Floriculture/Horticulture Society student organization, was elected president of the society’s collegiate division, and Erin Braun, a junior from Hallsville, was elected treasurer. The Texas A&M Floriculture/Horticulture Society was selected as the most outstanding club in the large school category, and the club’s judging team placed first in the vegetable division of the national judging contest.
“All in all, it was a very good year for Texas A&M at the annual meetings,” Lineberger said.
Lineberger, who also is the FHS faculty adviser, is the first ASHS president who had previously served as president of the collegiate division. He was president of the ASHS collegiate division while an undergraduate at North Carolina State University.
“Being active in our professional organization is a tremendous learning experience for our students, and it reflects well on our university. Texas A&M always is well represented in the society’s leadership, but it seems that this year is a banner year,” he said.
