SONORA — The Academy for Ranch Management will host an Effective Grazing Management workshop here Oct. 18-20 at the Sonora Research Station.
“This workshop is an advanced course for those who’ve had our basic class,” said Ray Hinnant, one of the instructors for the Academy of Ranch Management and senior research associate at Texas A&M University. “This workshop will almost exclusively focus on grazing management and nutrition, more specifically developing a grazing program plan that will fit their management objective and goals.”
The objectives of the class include getting a better understanding of plant requirements and manipulating plant communities through grazing. Participants will learn how to design a grazing strategy to meet management goals, learn to use animals for vegetation management, rest and rotation practices for increased plant vigor, nutritional management and economic analysis.
Participants will receive a free copy of The Grazing Manager, a software program that allows the individual to conduct inventory, planning and monitor grazing.
The basic course is a prerequisite for the advanced rangeland management and burn classes, and will be offered Jan. 10-12.
The basic course provides information on developing strategies to meet the resource goals for each individual, Hinnant said. Basic information on rangeland ecology, plant identification, grazing strategies, wildlife/livestock interactions, nutrition and habitat restoration are covered in detail.
Registration for either of the courses can be done online or contact Hinnant at (979) 845-5580. The fee for each three-day workshop is $350. Go to http://rangeweb.tamu.edu/arm for more information.
