AMARILLO — Sandra Duke was recently named regional manager for the Panhandle with the Better Living for Texans program, according to Texas Cooperative Extension’s Donna Brauchi, district director for family and consumer science programs.
Better Living for Texans is implemented under the Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, a cooperative endeavor of Texas Cooperative Extension, the Texas Department of Human Services and the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.
The program provides nutrition education to assist food stamp-eligible and limited income families and individuals acquire the knowledge, skills and behavior necessary to maximize resources, have nutritionally sound diets and improve self-sufficiency.
“Sandra is a key member of our Panhandle district education team,” said Brauchi. “She will be working with and supporting the county Extension agents in designing education opportunities for BLT program clients to enhance their nutrition and food dollar management skills.”
Duke’s experience includes tenure as the interim director of the Canyon Chamber of Commerce, and as a self employed retail business owner-operator.
In addition, Duke held coordinator positions in admissions and bereavement services with a Dallas-based hospice corporation before moving to the Panhandle. She was a home economics teacher at Clint High School in Clint, Texas.
The new program manager earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics education from Texas Tech University, where she graduated magna cum laude, and received the Tinsley Memorial Scholarship.
