RANKIN - A field day to demonstrate various methods of controlling brush is planned at the Wagon Wheel Ranch near Rankin for the afternoon of Nov. 5.
Texas Cooperative Extension, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are sponsoring the event, set to begin at 1:30 p.m. The ranch is 20 miles north of Rankin on U.S. Highway 349.
Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units (CEUs) will be offered. Raymond Quigg, Extension agent in Upton County and a program coordinator, said the field day will give land owners an on-site look at various brush control strategies.
“Our aim is to show how to implement each of these control techniques,” said Quigg. “We will also have the added luxury of being able to actually see how well the various techniques have worked on this particular ranch. I think what we’ll see at this field day will be a real eye-opener for a lot of us.”
Topics covered will include mesquite control using chemicals and backhoes; contour ripping and furrowing techniques for land reclamation; and mapping with geographic information systems. The field day will end at 3:30 p.m. For further information, contact Quigg at (915) 693-2313 or 693-2281.
