COLLEGE STATION - Three members of the Texas A&M University System Agriculture Program are among faculty and staff chosen to receive The Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award.
Dr. Chester Fehlis, Dr. David Zuberer and Dr. J. Martyn Gunn were presented the award, one of the most prestigious at the university, in a ceremony today. They received $4,000 along with a gold commemorative watch and a framed certificate.
The Association of Former Students has sponsored the award since 1955, and to date, has awarded more than $2 million to some 675 recipients.
Dr. Chester Fehlis, a 1969 Texas A&M graduate, is the associate vice chancellor of agriculture and director of Texas Cooperative Extension. Over the years, Fehlis has dedicated himself to agricultural Extension work in Texas. He has worked as a county agent, a district director and in many administrative positions within Extension. His expertise has led to his appointment to many national committees.
Dr. David Zuberer has been a professor of soil microbiology at Texas A&M for more than 25 years. He has many professional publications to his credit. Zuberer has written a book and is the author of more than 55 technical papers. He is a fellow of the Soil Science Society of America and was awarded the Gamma Sigma Delta Award for undergraduate teaching in 2003. Zuberer has conducted extensive research, and his grant money at Texas A&M totals more than $700,000.
Dr. J. Martyn Gunn is a professor of biochemistry and nutrition and associate head of the biochemistry and biophysics department. Gunn is known for being well-liked by his students and currently serves as a member of the Faculty Senate. Recently, he was responsible for the formation of the Life Sciences Learning Community, which helps students enhance their college experience and their appreciation for both the arts and the sciences.
