SAN ANTONIO A San Antonio Area Beef Cattle Shortcourse will be presented Jan. 13, 20 and 27 at the Performing Arts Room of Palo Alto College in San Antonio. Registration for each session will be at 6 p.m., with presentations beginning at 6:30.
The sessions, hosted by Texas Cooperative Extension and the Bexar County Beef Cattle Committee, are free; pre-registration is not required. One continuing education unit will be offered for each three-hour-long session.
The Jan. 13 shortcourse will cover beef quality issues, including animal identification and health.
The second session on Jan. 20 will focus on forage production and herd health, including hay testing and herd rebuilding.
The final session on Jan. 27 will deal with brush control and/or monitoring cattle grazing habits using global positioning systems.
Topics for the San Antonio area courses are based on responses of attendees from the previous year, said Col. Howard Ham, member of the Bexar County Beef Cattle Committee.
“We also take highlights from the three-day beef cattle course offered by Texas A&M University in the summer,” he said. “Then we add any subjects of interest to the beef cattle industry that may have come up since the A&M course.”
The San Antonio Area Beef Cattle Shortcourses are designed to give those interested in beef cattle production a short but thorough overview of topics on growing and maintaining beef cattle, said Jerry Warren, Extension agent for agriculture in Bexar County.
“We have experts from throughout Texas on topics like animal health, predator control, foraging, brush control and cattle grazing habits presenting at these sessions,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for people interested in beef cattle to get a lot of useful information in a fairly short time.”
A question and answer segment will follow each session.
