COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Mark McFarland, Texas AgriLife Extension Service soil fertility and water quality specialist, has received a 2009 National Award for Excellence in Extension for the southern region from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
McFarland was one of five regional Excellence in Extension award recipients recognized for making significant impacts on constituents served by the Extension program at their university, according to the association.
A Regents Fellow, McFarland is the water quality coordinator for the Southern Region Project. Since 2000, he has coordinated the Southern Region Water Quality Program, a 13-state land-grant university collaborative dedicated to research and resource development.
McFarland’s primary areas of focus include soil fertility management, watershed and water resource management, domestic and irrigation water quality, and disturbed and contaminated land reclamation.
Much of his research and educational programming focuses on the efficient use of nitrogen and phosphorus in crop production systems.
The annual award is sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities Cooperative Extension Section and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
