AgriLife Extension program April 27 in New Berlin to be a ‘ponding’ experience

NEW BERLIN – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will hold a Pond Management Program from 8:30 a.m. – noon April 27 at Brehm Farms, 7871 Farm-to-Market Road 775 in New Berlin.

The program is presented by AgriLife Extension offices in Atascosa, Bexar, Guadalupe and Wilson counties.

“This past spring and summer was an experience no one wants to go through again,” said Bryan Davis, AgriLife Extension agent, Bexar County. “One of the many problems from the extreme drought was dried-up farm ponds. In terms of pond management, it’s best to plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

Davis said program topics will include pond fertilization techniques, aquatic-weed identification and control, restocking after drought and predator management near ponds.

“Attendees are encouraged to bring samples of any pond weeds they want identified the day of the program,” Davis said. “We also suggest attendees wear cool, comfortable clothing and bring their own lawn chair since we’ll be outside all morning for program presentations.”

Attendees with Texas Department of Agriculture commercial, non-commercial and private pesticide applicator licenses are eligible for three continuing education units — two general and one integrated pest management, Davis said.

Registration is $10 and attendees are required to preregister by April 25 by contacting the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County at 210-467-6575 or Guadalupe County at 830-303-3889.
