North American Hair Sheep Association membership meeting is July 14 in San Angelo

Organizers say it’s a time to meet, greet and eat!

SAN ANGELO – The North American Hair Sheep Association will conduct their annual membership meeting beginning at 10 a.m. July 14 at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in San Angelo.

The center is located at 7887 U.S. Highway 87, about five miles north of San Angelo.

“As a number of West Texan ranchers know, hair sheep, no matter what the breed, are valuable property now and have been for quite some time,” said Chad Coburn, Texas Agrilife Extension Service agent in Sterling County. “Those interested in learning more about this fast-growing business should seriously consider attending this meeting.

“This industry is tailor-made for the small-acreage landowner who doesn’t have the time or experience to deal with other breeds that can require much higher management levels.

“As the organizers of this event say, this meeting will be a great time for anybody interested in hair sheep to meet, greet and eat,” he said.

Coburn said Eldorado rancher Bob Buchholz is scheduled to present a program on predator control. There will also be live demonstrations on ram and ewe selection and a question-and-answer panel discussion.

Hair sheep lamb will be included on the noon meal menu to be prepared by Charlie Blanek of San Angelo, Coburn said.

The day will conclude with the association’s annual business meeting.

“Pens will also be available for private treaty hair sheep sale offerings,” Coburn said. “So bring your best animals, because you can rest assured most everybody here that day will be interested in hair sheep.”
