AgriLife Extension to host range restoration meeting June 6 near Guthrie

GUTHRIE – The 2013 Western Rolling Plains Range Restoration Meeting will start at 8 a.m. June 6 at the Bobby Curtis “06” Ranch, located 13 miles east of Guthrie on U.S. Highway 82 East.

Further driving instructions, given by Toby Oliver, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent in King County, are to turn left on County Road 365 – tank batteries will be on the right. Then go six-tenths of a mile and turn right into the ranch gate.

The registration fee will be $25 with RSVPs due by June 4, or $30 at the door, Oliver said. Make checks payable to: King County 4-H, and send them to the King County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, Box 125, Guthrie, TX 79236. RSVPs can be made by calling 806-596-4451 or emailing t-oliver@tamu.edu.

– Overview and Timeline of Recent Drought, Oliver.

– Assessing Rangeland Health, Dr. Dale Rollins, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist, San Angelo, and Dr. Darrell Ueckert, Regents Fellow and Texas A&M AgriLife Research emeritus rangeland ecologist, San Angelo.

– Water Harvesting on Rangelands, Rollins.

– Grazing Management/Nutrition in Dry Times and Desert Termites, Dr. Bill Pinchak, AgriLife Research beef cattle nutritionist, Vernon.

– Range Evaluation and Management Techniques, local ranchers.

– Restoration of a Hydrologically Dysfunctional Rangeland, Ueckert.

– Managing Wildlife During/Following Drought, Rollins.

– Quail Response to Large Scale Wildfires, Becky Ruzicka, AgriLife Extension technician, Dallas.

– Economic Update and Pasture Rainfall Insurance, Stan Bevers, AgriLife Extension economist, Vernon.

– U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service Program Updates and Assistance, Manuel DeLeon, USDA-NRCS wildlife biologist, Lubbock, and Stan Bradbury, USDA-NRCS range specialist, Lubbock.
