DENTON – To help defray some of the expense associated with horse vaccinations and health costs, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Denton County and the Denton County Extension Horse Committee will sponsor a “Low Cost Horse Health Care Clinic” from 8:30 a.m. to noon, April 12 at the North Texas Fair and Rodeo fairgrounds in Denton.

Veterinarians will be onsite to administer different vaccination packages at a reduced cost, and no preregistration is required, said Brandon Boughen, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources in Denton County.

The following vaccination packages will be offered at these prices:

  • Rabies $10. West Nile $22.
  • Coggins $30.
  • Fall Shot Package $65 — includes: rhinopneumonitis, influenza, streptococcus equi (the virus that causes strangles) and West Nile.
  • Yearly Shot Package – $84 Includes: VEE, WEE, and EEE, tetanus, rhinopneumonitis, influenza, streptococcus equi, West Nile and rabies.
  • Yearly Shot Package without strangles – $70.
  • Teeth floating – $115 — as time allows.

“Denton County is the home for more than 26,000 horses, and getting them all vaccinated annually presents challenges physically and economically,” Boughen said. “Maintaining your horse’s health will improve their appearance, performance and overall well-being.”

Vaccination programs will vary according to the horse’s age, environment, exposure risk and geographic region, he said.
“It is important that all horses located on the same premises be included in the vaccination program,” Boughen said. “A single unprotected horse can provide a reservoir of infection and has the potential to spread diseases to others.

The more horses vaccinated, the less likely a disease will spread in a given area. Preventing a disease through a proper vaccination program is safer, easier and cheaper than treating the disease itself and will also reduce the risk of a quarantine situation.”
