Combined Wheat and Vegetable Field Day slated for April 23 in Uvalde

UVALDE – The Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Uvalde will present the Combined Wheat and Vegetable Field Day from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. April 23 at the center, located at 1619 Garner Field Road.

The field day is free and open to anyone with an interest in wheat and/or vegetable production, coordinators said.

Registration will be from 7:45‐8 a.m., followed by a welcome and presentations.

Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – one integrated pest management and one general – will be available to individuals with private pesticide applicator licenses.

Topics and presenters for the morning will be:

— Irrigation Management for Wheat, Thomas Marek, Texas A&M AgriLife Research agricultural engineer, Amarillo.

— Physiological Traits and Wheat Performance in the Wintergarden Region, Dr. Xuejun Dong, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service assistant professor of agronomy and crop physiology, Uvalde.

— Wheat IPM, Dr. Mark A. Muegge, associate professor and AgriLife Extension entomologist, Fort Stockton.

— Diseases, Diagnosis and Fungicide Use for Wheat and Vegetables, Dr. Ron French, AgriLife Extension specialist in plant pathology, Amarillo.

— Specialty Vegetable Crops Update: Leafy Greens and Artichoke, Dr. Daniel Leskovar, AgriLife Research professor of vegetable physiology and Uvalde center resident director.

— Wheat Market Situation and Outlook, Dr. Rob Hogan, AgriLife Extension agricultural economist, Uvalde.

— Winter and Spring Wheat Variety Performance in South Texas, Dr. Clark Neely, AgriLife Extension specialist in soil and crop sciences, College Station.

From 10:20–10:30 a.m., field day participants will travel to nearby wheat and vegetable plots, where the presentations will continue with:

— Drought Tolerance and Water Use Efficiency in Wheat, Dr. Qingwu Xue, AgriLife Research crop stress physiologist, Amarillo.

— Wheat Breeding, Dr. Amir Ibrahim, AgriLife Research small grains breeding program leader in College Station, and Dr. Jackie Rudd, AgriLife Research wheat breeder, Amarillo.

After these presentations, participants will tour winter and spring wheat and artichoke plots, then return to the center.

A sponsored lunch, which is included, will be provided from noon-1 p.m., at which time the field day will conclude.
