Basics of permaculture program slated for July 15 in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The Backyard Gardening series of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Bexar County will present “The Basics of Permaculture” program from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 15 at its San Antonio office.

The office is in Suite 208 of the Conroy Square business complex, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive.

“Permaculture as it applies to horticulture is a means of holistically using nature and the natural environment in a sustainable way that mirrors a natural ecosystem balance,” said David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture in Bexar County. “It involves the implementation of horticultural principles and plant materials in relationship with one another and the surrounding environment.”

Rodriguez said the program would address the origins, ethics and foundations of permaculture, as well as its principles, patterns and designs.

“In this program, attendees will learn about basic small-scale urban permaculture, plus some of the tricks, techniques and common practices employed in permaculture,” Rodriguez said. “They will also be introduced to patio permaculture for application in small or limited spaces.”

He said the program will be presented by Nadia Gaona, Bexar County Master Gardener. The Bexar County Master Gardener association is a volunteer horticultural organization of AgriLife Extension.
