CAT SPRING — The 23rd annual Gulf Coast Grape Grower Field Day will be Feb. 6 at the Agricultural Society Hall, 13035 Hall Road, Cat Spring.
Registration is $35 per person and includes lunch and a wine social, according to Dr. Justin Scheiner, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service viticulturist.
The event begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. The morning program includes training systems for blanc du bois vines, cotton root rot issues, yeast assimilable nitrogen measurement and implications in wineries, the impact of foliar urea applications and an update on Pierce’s Disease-tolerant rootstock and variety trials.
Following the noon lunch, afternoon sessions include an industry update from the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association’s Jon Bowden, along with talks on fruit quality, vineyard irrigation and interpreting petiole test results.
In addition to Scheiner, speakers include Dr. Philip Shackelford, AgriLife Extension agent in Austin County; Fritz Westover with Westover Vineyard Advising; Sheila McBride, AgriLife Extension program specialist with the Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab in College Station; Dr. Greg Cobb, Texas A&M AgriLife Research horticulturist in College Station; Andrew Labay, AgriLife Extension associate in the viticulture and fruit lab in Fredericksburg; Dr. George Ray McEachern, visiting professor of horticulture at Texas A&M University in College Station; Dr. Ed Hellman, AgriLife Extension viticulturist in Lubbock; and Jim Kamas, AgriLife Extension fruit specialist in Fredericksburg.
