National FFA winner is Seminole FFA

SONORA – The Medina County 4-H senior wool judging team took top honors for their efforts in winning the 55th annual National 4-H Wool Judging Contest held in Sonora.
The contest and its sister event, the 15th annual National FFA Wool Judging Contest, headlined three days of youth activities held in conjunction with the 78th annual Sonora Wool and Mohair Show June 16-18.
4-H is the youth component of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
The Medina County 4-H team garnered a score of 1,688 to beat out the Crockett County 4-H team, which placed second with 1,632 points, edging out the third place Niobrara County, Wyoming 4-H team’s 1,627 points.
The winning Medina County team members were Maddy Ainsley, whose score of 607 points earned her high point individual honors for the entire contest, Ellie Jones and April Molitar. Their coach was Tim Tatsch.
The Seminole FFA team coached by Ryan Best and Mary Jenner won the National FFA Wool Judging Contest with 1,715 points, to slip by Irion County FFA, the second place winner, by only three points. However, Cy Brooks of the Irion County team was named the contest’s overall high-scoring individual with a score of 591 points. Goddard FFA, Roswell, New Mexico, took third with 1,639 points.
The winning Seminole FFA team members were Sawyer Jenkins, Jaclyn Beaty, Alec Winfrey and Bethany Jones.
The national 4-H and FFA wool judging contests are the premier events of the Sonora Wool and Mohair Show. The show features youth judging contests and wool and mohair fleece competitions. The event is sponsored by the Sonora Lions Club and Sonora Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Sonora Wool and Mohair Co. and AgriLife Extension.
