AgriLife Extension sets commercial turf and ornamental workshop

LUBBOCK – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the 2016 Commercial Turf and Ornamental Workshop from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Lubbock.

The center is located at 1102 E. Farm-to-Market Road 1294.

Vikram Baliga, AgriLife Extension horticulture agent in Lubbock County, said the workshop will offer five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units and four structural continuing education units.

“The talks will be targeted to those holding structural and/or commercial pesticide applicators licenses, but the information being presented will be beneficial for anyone who manages plants or a landscape, from homeowners to agricultural and horticultural producers, to lawn and landscape care professionals,” he said.  

The topics and speakers will include:

– Best Management Practices for Commercial and Home Lawns in West Texas, Dr. Joey Young, assistant professor of turfgrass sciences, Texas Tech University, Lubbock.

– Effective Use of Common Herbicides, Dr. Peter Dotray, AgriLife Extension weed science specialist, Lubbock.

– Integrated Pest Management Principles for Urban Landscape, Baliga.

– Turf and Ornamental Plant Disease Management, Dr. Ron French, AgriLife Extension plant pathologist, Amarillo.

– Herbicide Spray Drift Minimization, Mark Brown, AgriLife Extension agent in Lubbock County.  

Individual registration is $35 by Jan. 25 and $45 thereafter. The fee will cover the course, the continuing education units and lunch.
