Ag/Forest/Fire Winter Conservation Conference set March 8 in Borger

BORGER – An Ag/Forest/Fire Winter Conservation Conference on March 8 will be jointly sponsored by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas A&M Forest Service at the Frank Phillips College Center for Access and Innovation, 901 Opal St. in Borger.

The event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $10, payable at the door, and lunch will be sponsored by the Texas A&M Forest Service and Frank Phillips College.

“This program offers something for anyone interested in wintertime conservation practices involving plants adapting to different hardiness zones, living snow-fence windbreaks, storm damage and recovery, and wildfire protection,” said Kristy Synatschk Slough, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Hutchinson County.

In addition, the program will include an update on agricultural programs at the college and a tour of the new facilities, she said.

The program includes the following topics and speakers:

– Is Extreme Cold Affecting Your Plants?, Liz Moore, AgriLife Extension horticulture agent, Canyon.

– Benefits of Living Snow Fences: How and Where, Brian Scott, Texas A&M Forest Service urban forester, Canyon.

– An Ice Storm Hit…Now What?: Storm Damage and Recovery, Dr. Eric Taylor, AgriLife Extension forestry specialist, Overton.

– Recent Wildfire Activities and Protection Tips, Rich Gray, Texas A&M Forest Service regional fire coordinator, Wolfforth, and Jason Whisler, city of Borger emergency management coordinator, Borger.

– New Ag at FPC and Where Is It Taking Us?, Dr. Byron Housewright, Frank Phillips College agriculture professor. He will also lead the walk through the new facilities.
