Seven-county AgriLife Extension event slated for April 5

SNYDER – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in seven counties are readying for their annual Lower Rolling Plains Agricultural Conference set for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5 in the Scurry Coliseum, 900 E. Coliseum Drive in Snyder.

The event features a mix of both crop and livestock information, organizers said.

The counties conducting the program include Borden, Fisher, Garza, Mitchell, Lynn, Nolan and Scurry.

Topics and speakers during the morning’s general session will include:

– Cotton Economics, Dr. Jackie Smith, AgriLife Extension economist, Lubbock.

– Commodity Economics, Dr. Mark Welch, AgriLife Extension grain marketing economist, College Station.

– Laws and Regulations, Kyle Thompson, Texas Department of Agriculture field inspector, Abilene.

– Farm and Ranch Estate Planning, Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, AgriLife Extension agricultural law specialist, Amarillo.

Following a catered lunch, the program will split into concurrent A and B sessions.

Session A topics and speakers include:

– Weed Management Strategies for 2017, Dr. Peter Dotray, AgriLife Extension weed specialist, Lubbock.

– 2,4-D Management Techniques in Cotton, Dr. Seth Byrd, AgriLife Extension cotton specialist, Lubbock.

–Alternative Crop Considerations, Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist, Lubbock.

–Cotton and Agriculture Integrated Pest Management, Dr. Charles Allen, AgriLife Extension entomologist, San Angelo.

Session B topics and speakers include:

–Forage/Hay Production, Trostle.

–Weed and Brush Control in Range and Pastures, Ralph Porter, Dow AgroSciences senior sales representative, Abilene.

–Feral Hog Management, Dr. John Tomecek, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist, San Angelo.

–Plant Identification, Dr. Morgan Russell, AgriLife Extension range specialist, San Angelo.

–Cattle Market Outlook and Mineral Requirements for Cows on Rangeland, Dr. Ted McCollum, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist, Amarillo.     

Six Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered.

Individual registration is $25 at the door and includes lunch. For an accurate lunch count, those attending should RSVP by April 4 to the AgriLife Extension office in Scurry County at 325-573-5423.
