AgriLife Extension sets dates for Plainview, Snyder healthy cooking schools

                PLAINVIEW – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct their Dinner Tonight! Healthy Cooking School at two South Plains communities in coming weeks, said Dr. Angela Burkham, the agency’s family and community health state program leader at Amarillo.

                Burkham said the statewide program was developed as a recipe resource for encouraging at-home family mealtime through the preparation of easy, healthful, inexpensive meals.

                The Plainview program will be Nov. 14, starting with shopping with local vendors on site from 5-6 p.m. followed by cooking demonstrations from 6-8 p.m. at the Ollie Liner Center, 2000 S. Columbia St. Registration is $15 due upon arrival. For more information and to RSVP, call the AgriLife Extension office in Hale County at 806-291-5270.

                “Hunt for Dinner Tonight!” will be the theme of the second program Nov. 30 in Snyder, which starts with registration at 5:30 p.m. followed by the program from 6-7:30 p.m. at the 37th Street Church of Christ located at 2500 37th St.

The program will feature food demonstrations on preparing wild game dishes such as elk sliders, venison stew and roasted quail. Cost is $20 and includes samples and a cookbook. Preregistration ends Nov. 15 with no registration at the door. The program is limited to 75 registrants.                 Burkham said the Snyder program is a multi-county effort among Scurry, Mitchell, Borden, Lynn, Gaines and Crosby counties.

                “With the holiday season upon us, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with planning menus of healthy, cost-effective meals for our families and any guests who might arrive,” Burkham said. “The Dinner Tonight! program will give participants the knowledge and confidence they need to meet the tastes of the most discriminating guest. But better still will be knowing they can step into the new year with healthy, cost-conscious recipes their families will enjoy, thus making mealtime something to look forward to.“

                Burkham said both programs will offer a night full of fun that will include donated door prizes, food sampling and comradery. 

                “These programs are sure to set the mood for a wonderful, well-planned and healthy holiday season,” she said.
