Step Up and Scale Down weight-loss program to be presented in Austin

AUSTIN – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will present its Step Up and Scale Down program for weight loss Jan. 30 through April 17 in Austin.

“Step Up and Scale Down is an innovative 12-week program designed to guide participants toward weight management through the use of nutrition tips, exercise and a personalized weight-loss planner,” said Sonia Coyle, AgriLife Extension family and consumer sciences agent, Travis County. “It is a research-based program that has proven success in weight management and building healthy lifestyle habits.”

Coyle said the program will consist of a combination of in-person and online lessons. In-person lessons will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office, 1600-B Smith Road. These will be on Jan. 30, Feb. 6, March 6, March 27 and April 17. The remainder will be online.

The topics of the 12 sessions include: Scale Down by Setting Goals; Step Up to a Healthy Plate; Scale Down by Label Reading; Step Up to Breakfast and Menu Planning; Scale Down with Moves to Lose; Step Up Your Hydration; Scale Down by Finding your Motivational Mojo; Step Up to Healthy Snacking; Scale Down with a Colorful Plate; Step Up to Successful Socializing; Scale Down by Knowing Your Numbers; and Step Up and Celebrate.

Registration is $40 by Jan. 30, and includes a binder with handouts and a cookbook. After Jan. 30 the cost will be $50.

There will be incentives for those that attend all five classes, and a $10 gift card for those who achieve their weight goal, Coyle said.
