Seed Cotton/Base Acres Decision Workshop July 30 at the agency’s office for Guadalupe County.

The cost is $10 and attendees should RSVP to the AgriLife Extension office at 830-303-3889.

“The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 for Agriculture, also known as the 2018 Farm Bill, has new language dealing with generic acres and cotton production,” said Dr. Rob Hogan, AgriLife Extension economist, Uvalde. “New choices will need to be made for each tract with a U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency number by late summer.”

Hogan said Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Ag and Food Policy Center has developed a decision-aid tool to assist producers with the various options for their acres.

“This workshop has been set up for producers to learn more about this tool before their deadlines approach to make a decision,” he said.

Hogan said producers without prior knowledge of these changes will need to be introduced to the new rules and how these will apply to their operation. He said choices needing to be made for each FSA field number will be: allocation of generic base acres, if any, on the tract; the possible updating of base yields; and whether the tract will participate under the Agriculture Risk Coverage or Price Loss Coverage programs – a one-time choice.

“These are important decisions and we want to help producers make the best ones for their specific operation,” Hogan said.
