Bexar County Master Gardener Intern Training Class accepting applications

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Bexar County is accepting applications for Master Gardener Intern Training Class No. 63 to be held Wednesdays from Aug. 21- Nov. 13 at its offices in San Antonio.

Topics for this training will include Earth-Kind landscaping, integrated pest management, home orchards and vegetable gardens, water conservation, rainwater harvesting and turfgrass selection and care.

Classes will be in Suite 208 of the Conroy Square business complex, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive. unless otherwise indicated. Field trips are scheduled for Oct. 23 and Nov. 22.

A registration fee of $275 is payable in full on the first day of class. Class size is limited to 30 individuals.

“Master Gardener volunteer training is conducted by AgriLife Extension and is for adults interested in gardening, horticulture and related topics,” said David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture, Bexar County.

Master Gardener class topics include plant growth and development, plant diseases, insects, soils, basic landscaping and garden design.

Those completing classroom training and passing the final exam must complete a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service toward youth and adult education outreach. Trainees who become certified Master Gardeners will assist AgriLife Extension with community education in horticulture. Volunteer hours may be applied to a variety of approved projects to be discussed during training.

“Acceptance to the class is based on the person’s willingness to volunteer and the completeness of their application,” Rodriguez said.

Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the class, and approved applicants must attend a group interview for selection. Also, a background check is required on all applicants participating in any AgriLife Extension volunteer program and will be completed on the first day of class.

A processing fee of $100 will be administered for applicants withdrawing prior to Aug. 21.
