UPDATE: MARCH 18 EVENT CANCELED
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be holding two free workshops to better help farmers understand and utilize profitability spreadsheets.
The Profitability Workshop will be held on Feb. 19 and again on March 18 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1102 E. Farm-to-Market Road 1294 in Lubbock.
The workshop will run from 9 a.m.-noon; call 806-723-8412 to register. Participants may bring their own laptops to work on if desired.
“For 18 years, Texas farmers have been using the spreadsheet to estimate the relative profitability of different crops based on their knowledge of their own production history,” said Jackie Smith, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, Lubbock. “They need a straightforward spreadsheet that can be used to project relative profitability by entering prices, yields, input levels, etc.”
Smith said the primary objective of this project remains to not only continue to make the spreadsheet more effective and accurate but also to make them more user-friendly. In recent years, rapidly changing cotton prices have created an even greater need for a tool to estimate profitability.
“Through this project, cotton producers in Texas have access to a user-friendly spreadsheet to quickly and accurately determine the impact of changes in input prices and emerging technologies on profitability,” he said. “The 2020 crop decisions are being made in a somewhat improved price environment for cotton, which has resulted in an even greater demand for the profitability spreadsheet.”
