Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service poultry specialists will provide expert advice on raising, selecting and showing award-winning chickens and turkeys during an upcoming Market Poultry Workshop in College Station.

To preregister online, go to https://tx.ag/MarketPoultryWorkshop. The cost is $80 if registered by Sept. 5 and $100 thereafter for individuals or families. The cost for agriculture teachers and Texas A&M AgriLife employees is $35. Lunch is not provided.
Program geared toward show chicken exhibitors
Greg Archer, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension poultry specialist, Bryan-College Station, said the workshop is geared toward 4-H and FFA exhibitors and parents, agriculture teachers and AgriLife Extension personnel. However, he noted anyone interested in the basics of rearing and showing market chickens and turkeys for youth livestock shows is welcome.
Archer said the program is an opportunity for beginners and experienced exhibitors and teachers to ask questions and learn from experts and Texas poultry judges.
The program covers brooding, management, sanitation and feed programs, selection and processing methods for broilers, turkeys and roasters. There will also be opportunities for “hands on” practice in early culling, selecting and putting together show pens, as well as tips on handling birds.
“This type of programming has vastly improved many experienced exhibitors placing at shows,” Archer said. “And I would say it is extremely beneficial to anyone new to the project who wants to learn how to raise birds and what to look for in selecting birds for showing.”
If a cancellation becomes necessary, please send a notification to agriliferegister@tamu.edu. Cancellations received by Sept. 6 will be issued a refund, minus a $10 administrative fee.
