COLLEGE STATION — An Earth-Kind landscape short course will be offered Dec. 16-18 in the Horticulture/Forest Science Building on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.
“This is a continuing education program designed for professionals responsible for managing and maintaining urban green space such as residential landscapes, parks, commercial properties and golf courses,” said Dr. Mengmeng Gu, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist in College Station and one of the organizers.
Gu said the short course is aimed particularly at those interested in developing sustainable urban landscape conservation programs.
Before Dec. 1, registration is $375, or $345 for Texas Nursery and Landscape Association members, and includes lunches, breaks and handouts. After Dec. 1, registration is $435 or $405 for association members, and meals and handouts are not guaranteed. AgriLife Extension agents may register for $150. The three-day event includes 12 experts with AgriLife Extension and Texas A&M AgriLife Research. Topics include: landscape and turf weed identification and integrated weed management; landscape pest identification and integrated pest management; turf problem diagnostics and control; Earth-Kind landscape principles and crapemyrtle bark scale; plant disease and management; new woody plants; using green walls in landscapes; laws and regulations update; honeybees in landscapes; dealing with drought and salinity; East Texas plant trials and Texas SuperStar plants; what’s new or not in chemical labeling; and edible landscapes.
The Texas Nursery and Landscape Association has approved 20 continuing education units for certified professionals and the Texas Department of Agriculture has approved two laws and regulations, 11 integrated pest management and seven general units for licensed pesticide applicator recertification.
