COLLEGE STATION The Texas A&M University Collegiate Poultry and Poultry Products Judging Team won the Southern Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest on April 5-6 held at Louisiana State University.
This is the second consecutive year that a Texas A&M University team has won the annual contest.
Team members are Tim Bolton of La Grange, who is majoring in biomedical sciences; Kris Ford, Beeville, poultry science; Chesney Steffen, LaVernia, poultry science; and Darrell Walter, San Antonio, poultry science. Krista Schneider, Marion, food sciences, was the team alternate.
W. F. Krueger, professor in the department of poultry science, is team coach. He has coached 15 national championship teams in 18 years.
Steffen was second high-scoring individual and Walter was fifth high-scoring individual in the overall contest. Walter, Ford and Steffen were first, second and seventh high-scoring individuals, respectively, in the market division.
The top teams were Texas A&M University, first; Kansas State University, second; North Carolina State University, third (and tied for second place); Louisiana State University, fourth, and University of Arkansas, fifth.
The Southern Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest is sponsored by the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association, headquartered in Decatur, Ga., and is the largest such association in the world. In 2002 the contest name will be changed to the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest to recognize its sponsor and to indicate its nationwide status.
